The Rhode Island Certification Process is designed to measure counselor
competency .  RIBCCDP recognizes that Chemical Dependency Counselors,
Prevention Specialists, Student Assistance Counselors and Criminal Justice
Professionals are necessarily educated in a wide range of disciplines, therapeutic
approaches and counseling techniques.

The Chemical Dependency profession is comprised of persons with diverse
educational and experiential backgrounds.  This certification system is designed to
accommodate and evaluate those counselors who are experientially trained as
well as those who are academically trained.  It defines the core knowledge and
skill bases needed by all counselors regardless of treatment setting or
professional training and orientation.

The RIBCCDP defines a baseline standard for all credentials offered.  Counselors
are given recognition for meeting specific predetermined criteria in substance
abuse.  Voluntary professional certification is not intended as a license to practice,
nor as a qualification for a certain position.  It may be accepted as a preferred or
alternate credential by an employer, civil service system, state licensing body or
third-party underwriter.  This system provides the counselor with a tool for
marketing his/her skills and competence.  It defines the unique role of the
Advanced Chemical Dependency Professional II, Advanced Chemical Dependency
Professional, Chemical Dependency Clinical Supervisor, Prevention Specialist,
Student Assistance Counselor, Co-Occurring Disorder Professional and Criminal
Justice Professional as health and human service providers.

The RIBCCDP has been a participating member in the International Certification &
Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) since 1988.  The IC&RC sets international
standards for counselor competency and develops and maintains written
examinations for each reciprocal credential offered.
